Broome to Darwin Itinerary

Having 14 travel days with a 4WD camper between Broome and Darwin we have a dilemma. I am afraid your adopted country is too big! You sold us on the Gibb Road (we took your advice that we can do it, + 60 first time). We plan the Bungle Bungles and the parks around Darwin. How much of the Gibb Road can we do? I feel we have to skip the part going north to Kalumburu.

Will give you our experience after the trip if we survive. The time of trip is October.

Response to: Broome to Darwin Itinerary

Hi Theo,
That's great that you want to do it! October is still a long way away so you have plenty of time to do the planning. Planning and driving will not present any problems. But whether you'll survive... I hope you do realise just how hot it will be in October?

(See this reader submission about walking in the Bungles in October.)

Regarding your itinerary, you are correct. I would definitely skip the detour up the Kalumburu Road. It's not just a time issue, there is also an insurance problem with taking hire cars to the Mitchell Plateau.

How much else can you see? With good planning you should be able to stop at all the big sights.

I'm about to finish my travel guide book. The chapter with all the sample itineraries is on the to-do list for today. That will be a huge help for everybody who is wondering just what exactly they will be able to fit in, and how.

(Update: Now available here.)

And as soon as that book is done I will also create a reader section on the site here, where people can share their itineraries and get feedback from me and help each other.

(Update: Now live here.)

I get many questions like that and it is impossible for me to respond to all of them in detail. But if we all do it together on the site then everyone benefits.

October is still far away. I hope you don't mind waiting a little bit longer!

PS: Thanks so much for offering to share your experiences after. I look forward to hearing about your trip!
