Fishing licence/permits for Kimberley area

by Phil Lambert
(Mooloolaba Qld)

Dear Birgit, I have been trying to research the requirements for fishing licences or permits to fish in the Kimberley area (fresh & saltwater), and have come up with some conflicting information
Are you able to tell me what I will need to fish with rod & line + possibly a cast net (if allowed).

Regards, Phil.

Fishing licenses/permits for Kimberley

Hi Phil,

The reason that you came up with conflicting information could be that the rules just changed.
As of March 2, 2010, you need a license if you want to fish from a powered vessel ("Recreational Fishing from Boat", $30).
There is no license required to fish from the bank.
You do need a license for cast nets ("Net fishing", $40).
There are also varying bag limits.

The "Freshwater Angling" license only applies to southern WA. It's not needed up here.

You can apply for your licenses online or you can also get them from any post office here. (Well, I assume you can. This where we get them in Kununurra.) They have the forms. What you do is fill in the form, pay your fees, and they give you the receipt which is all you need to produce if checked until you receive your license.

That's the short of it.

If you have any other specific questions and want to hear it from the horses mouth ring the Department of Fisheries in Broome: 9193 8600

If you want all the detail I recommend you download the relevant guides from the Department of Fisheries website.

WA Fishing Licences
by: Anonymous

Hello,
You can no longer get a WA fishing licence from any Australia Post Offices. You need to go online to www.fish.wa.gov.au or call the office in Broome 9193 8600 and they can let you know the office closest to you where you can pay cash.
Thank you.
