Fishing below The Mitchell Falls

by Brad Myers
(Perth)

We are heading up to the Gibb River Road in May and I was wondering if there is anywhere to fish below the Mitchell Falls? I read that you can access the bottom area and I'm happy to do a bit of a hike if needed. If not can you recommend any other spots to try my luck?

Hi Brad,

Sorry about the delayed reply. Usually I get a notification e-mail when someone submits a question but there must be a bug in the system.

Anyway, you'd need to contact CALM. I never heard of anyone wanting to fish down there and I don't know if it's allowed or not.

That's an awful long walk to carry your fishing gear. Do read up on the walk in detail. I guess if you just catch and release it's possible to carry all your gear in, but ice and taking fish back? You could fly in but I doubt the heli pilots would want your fish in their machines. Also, from the heli pad you still have to get down to the river which is a pretty steep scramble.

The King Edward River is one place to try your luck, but otherwise you'd have to make your way down to Port Warrender which is not an easy feat.

Mitchell Falls fishing

I doubt it's practical to fish at the falls, but if you continue north from the turnoff to Pt Warrender (Point Walsh) you'll find good fishing off the rocks. It's a serious 4wd track, it took me 3 hours for the last 7 km if I remember right, but spectacular, tow no more than a short off road trailer. No water, drop dunny, and watch for crocs.
Adventurers only. Enjoy !
